World War II Background Assignment Website

Since my original plan for your World War II assignments got dashed to pieces, the new assignment is as follows: Fifteen years after leaving Devon School, Gene (in A Separate Peace) returns and reflects on his experiences as a sixteen-year-old boy attending the preparatory school in 1942 during World War II. Your job will be to create a time capsule for Gene that will help him remember the summer that changed his life. You will collect a variety of information on 1942-1945. With the data you find, you will develop a wiki including photos of items to include in a time capsule that will give an overall representation of the time using items from 5 of the categories below. World War II The draft Advertisements and propaganda posters Entertainment (Popular authors, singers & songs, actors & movies, athletes, etc.) Fashion in the 1940s Women's changing roles Political leaders in office during 1942-1945 To prove your understanding of this topic you'll need to do the following: An "A" capsule must include five of the following components and a paragraph about each component you include. In the paragraph, you must include a summary of the component, how the component relates to the time period (1940-1945), and why you chose to include that component.Components include: Information about WW II (examples include: the battles, the draft, or civilian involvement) 2 advertisements and/or American propaganda posters from World War II (This component has 2 items: each advertisement/poster is considered an item. The paragraph needs to include both advertisements/posters.) information about popular authors, singers & songs, movies & actors, athletes, etc. information about a new invention information about fashion in the 1940s information about preparatory schools during the 1940s information about Political leaders during 1942-1945 Create a wiki that includes pictures of your objects and the paragraphs explaining their importance. Post a link to your wiki on the comments section here and make sure each group member's name appears on the wiki. http://www.wikispaces.com/ Example: http://english10x.wikispaces.com/ You will find useful information on the links posted on the comments.

First Extra Credit Question

Hello all,
Hope your summer has been excellent thus far, and that you're getting to those summer reading books. Here is your first opportunity for extra credit.

Although To Kill a Mockingbird is written in first person from the point of view of Scout, the book is really focusing on Jem. It is primarily about how he grows up during this influential summer (with some important moments in Scout's life). Why do you feel that Harper Lee chose to write the novel from this point of view?

Please respond to the question via comments to the blog. Feel free to respond to another person's comments; just make sure everything is school appropriate. Don't forget to include your name.

Summer Reading List

In case you forgot or lost the reading list:

Bless Me, Ultima - Rudolpho Anaya
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Catcher in the Rye - J. D. Salinger

Greetings

Hello All,
In order to help you read, analyze, and (it is to be hoped) love your summer reading novels, I have set up this blog to help you stay in touch with your fellow students and me. I will, occasionally, be posting questions to help you think about your books. Any resulting blog discussions will count as extra credit.
As with anything school-related, I am expecting your best behavior. Please do not post negative responses to one another, or use inappropriate language. I want this to be an opportunity to share, not to verbally abuse each other. Should you have any questions, feel free to email me, or post a note.
Have a pleasant summer, and keep reading!!!!
